From Friday 11-209-2009 until today 11-30-2009!   GREAT -- I can't remember time off work (HOME SWEET HOME)  since I've worked OESC last 13 yrs!

I'm still excited about TIANA

The first Disney princess since Mulan in 1998, Princess Tiana is breaking new ground in the old classic fairy tale. The first African American princess -- a point that has left some joyful, others not -- she is also the first to be set in modern times. The Princess and the Frog, which opens nationwide Dec. 11, 2009 also returns to the classic hand-drawn animation that audiences have adored for generations. Everyone already knows the story -- how a princess kisses a frog so that he can become human -- but the movie gives that old saw a modern twist. It's set in the mystical bayous of Louisiana and features music by Oscar-winning composer Randy Newman, the man behind the music of Toy Story.

file://But/ it was a simple e-mail from my professional... down home girlfriend's recipe....

SWEET POTATO PIE

1. buy two or three large sweet potatoes, I purchase the big ones, they are less stringy.(purchased from Home town or Otwells grocery. They have the best orange skin potatoes.


2. boil the potatoes whole after you wash them.,(sometime I add one white potato) fork to test doneness, peal while hot(the skin will slip off easily)


3. I mash with a stick of real butter while hot, place in my mixer and whip them:
• every time you raise the handle of the mixer, with a fork, strain, get the strings out.
• When all of the strings are out, I put back in the mixer,
o add 14-1 can of milnot,
o add one cup of sugar for each potato.


If this is not sweet enough add more sugar to taste,
• I add a dash of lemon juice,
• add 3 teaspoons of nutmeg,
• 2 teaspoons of cinnamon, and
• I tablespoon of vanilla.
If you want more nutmeg, you can add a little at a time. If you need more milk add more milk.
• Then at 2 eggs per potato.
This is what makes your pie light and holds together, the milnot is what makes it fluffy, so, if the filling is thin, that' great.
You can make your pie crust or purchase from the store the Ritz pie crust that you roll out in your pan. Or you can buy the Mrs. Smith or Ritz frozen pie crust. If you buy these, I always re-pinch the crust when I put the filling in

• Bake it at 375 degrees, delicious

Big Mama’s Hot Water Corn Bread

***What you need***


• 1 cup cornmeal
• 1/2 tsp salt
• 1 tsp sugar
• 2 cups water
apprx 1 tsp of butter
apprx 2 Tbls fried meat grease or bacon drippings or even Crisco (but not Olive Oil!)
• enough cooking oil to cover the bottom of your skillet to almost 1/4 inch up the side.
• a medium-sized mixing spoon (about three times size of a regular soup or place spoon)
• a mixing bowl
• paper towels to drain cooked bread
• a pot to boil the water
****What you do***
• Mix together the cornmeal, salt & sugar in the bowl with a fork. Set aside. This is your "dry mix."
• Put the 2 cups of water in pot and let come to a boil. When water is boiling, stir in the 2 Tblsp of fried meat grease and the tsp of butter & let it all boil again. This is your "hot water mix."
• Get your skillet & cooking oil ready for frying. You are going to want the frying oil hot enough to "pop water."
• Slowly add some of the water mix to the dry mix in the bowl, stirring it in. You only want to add enough of the hot water mix to get a mushy consistency that will let you scoop the mush with the mixing spoon.
• When your skillet & frying oil is ready, you can start frying the scoops of cornmeal. Don't let it cook too fast or slow. Too fast & it will burn; too slow & it will be over oily.
• Let each side brown as much as you want. (My sister likes hers crunchy, but I like mine golden & kind of soft.) Take out & drain on paper towels.

Hot water cornbread is best eaten hot. If you do save some for later, you can break the patties up into hot soup, beans or gumbo, but hot is best.

I'm having a Thanksgiving feast with Afrono Quilters next Monday.... I heard my girlfriend say she would make hot-water cornbread.....  WOW!   I volunteered candied yams!
INGREDIENTS:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
2 pounds yams, peeled and sliced 1/4 inch thick   +    about 1 1/2 cups water.
Boil yams until slightly underdone, to avoid breaking. Strain, cool and set aside.
In a large container whisk together orange juice, corn syrup, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla and zest

1 teaspoon vanilla extract
4 tablespoons unsalted butter softened
1/2 cup orange juice
1/2 cup granulated sugar, more to taste
1/2 cup light brown sugar, more to taste
1/2 teaspoonground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoonground allspice
1 cup raisins (optional)
2 cups pineapple chunks (optional)
1 pkg marshamallows

1. Place the yams in a 12- by 12-inch baking pan. Mix the butter, both sugars, cinnamon, and allspice in a small bowl until blended. Sprinkle this mixture over the sweet potatoes (yams)  Cover the baking pan tightly and bake for 25 minutes.

2. Sprinkle the raisins and pineapple chunks over the yams and baste them with the juices in the pan. Cover the yams and continue baking until very tender and the juices are bubbling, about 15-20 minutes. Serve hot from the pan.

Good Old man..... Brother Murray kept promising me a package.... to repair.  And of course I want his family story....





Some of my quilt friends...

are superb at math.... I minored in accounting/work as a statistical anaylst -- 8-5-- M-F....   THUS you will find complete laziness in my quilting - thinking.   I do like for the finished producted to be balanced. 

From most of my Caucasian quilt-friends, I learned the qtr inch, 45 degree triagle... fat qtr... lots of addition and multiplication as such.... BUT I generally refuse to engage the conversation.   I press, re-measure, and I don't ever cut out ALL of the pattern as needed.    I go in sections..... adding and waiting for colors, dreams and inspiration to kick into my quilt project... thinking of who I might give it to!

I googled several sites, and borrowed to share.... (hopin this is different from stealing!) and therefore, I've included the chart below based on squares. 

My quilt had to have odd 5x6inch fabric cuts! yea!!!


My quilting space is somewhat as-u-see - it.... But I don't think of it as such...There's a superb air freshner, a window, three bookshelves of fabric, and an open closet....

Anybody notice my grand-daughter's toy.... and my boy has a red chair and coloring paper for his careful visits...(naturally this 4-yr old tested the rotary cutter... it's my room -- I told him NOT to touch my stuff...so memaw left the rotary ready for me to use over and over again..... I smile to know he was determined to learn the hard way.... YEP he saw blood---cut skin when nosing into my stuff.)

NEXT ---   I press again to make a completed 9-paths.   ALL MY CENTER BLOCKS ARE GOLD!


I'm going to take all sixteen completed, pressed 9-patch block, pressed...
I will square each one -to an exact - idenically measured SQUARE... all same size!!!
VERY IMPORTANT.....
DRUMROLLLLL pls......




I've cut apart evenly / Up & Down / across the middle of 9-patch

to make four new units
