Word of the Day... ' kivers '

kivers -- quilts or blankets to "cover" up

``A kiver is an African quilt,`` Keeve said. ``A real quilt is made of scraps of different things, like silk, satin, wool.

That`s what I conceive the black experience to be. Wherever you find another black person, he is a part of me.

It doesn`t matter where they`re from. They are another square on my quilt.``

A Time of Love and Hate ..... The TWISTED 60'S

Martin Luther King, Jr.
I was born in 1954 and all of my most impressionable memories (21 years later)  revolved around segregation and integration..... and the civil war movement in small town America - a place called Chickasha Oklahoma and later moving to our state capital - Oklahoma City, OK!
I heard my parents and grandparents talk of the Kennedys and Martin Luther King.... I saw them shed tears over their funeral services.  My five siblings were nurtured, we didn't know we were poor since there was always a plenty.  Fun-filled, easy wonderful transistor radios... and black and white color TV days!

My Twistin 60's project is a hip hurrah to the  LOVE BUG..... my brothers first car purchases were for this VW for a price tag of $1999 (financed over 24 months!)   I learned to drive a stick shift!  Too cool.

Two of these same brothers -- served in Vietnam (Army and Air Force).  I knew enough to hope and pray for them.  I knew large numbers of black boys were being drafted and dying..... My brothers served honorably and returned home safe and intact.

The detailed shot might show the flower shaped love, flowers in the windows, and the pencil pointing to the word...the love tail-pipe.    Local gas wars where you could buy gas @ 0.15 to 0.33 cent a gallon!  I layered and machine appliqued the pillow.... I like directional -- curves and zig-zays of colorways on the groovy green batik background!    Peanuts was also a popular 1950-1970's newspaper and Saturday cartoon!  Finally - strip piece some music and love symbols...and more to the flower power of the decade!
As surely as my family and I embraced the message of non-violence and Christian principles of Dr. Martin Luther King,
during this life changing era -- I recall the lyrics of the song "War"  written by Norman Whitfield on the  Motown label in 1969. Notably, it was a blasting.... loud, attention getting song... fearless as an anti-Vietnam War protest song – Edwin Starr's version of "War" was a number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1970, and is not only the most successful and well-known record of his career, but is also one of the most popular protest songs ever recorded.

I'm offering my thanks to  Madame Samm and Mary Winegar for hosting and organizing a fantastic hop.   I'm onto something really Good... it drives and pushes me with a deadline to be creative....!!!   Visit my other friends on this last day of the Twistin to the Sixties Hop!

WAR  by Edwin Starr

War, huh, yeah
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Uh-huh
War, huh, yeah
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Say it again, y'all
War, huh, good God
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Listen to me
Ohhh, war, I despise
Because it means destruction
Of innocent lives
War means tears
To thousands of mothers eyes
When their sons go to fight
And lose their lives
I said, war, huh
Good God, y'all
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Say it again
War, whoa, Lord
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Listen to me
War, it ain't nothing
But a heartbreaker
War, friend only to the undertaker
Ooooh, war
It's an enemy to all mankind
The point of war blows my mind
War has caused unrest
Within the younger generation
Induction then destruction
Who wants to die
Aaaaah, war-huh
Good God y'all
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Say it, say it, say it
War, huh
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing

Non-quilters/sewists CANNOT Comprehend.....

That is, those persons in the other world.... those - my husband, friends, nurses and others just CANNOT Understand what in the world is a BLOG HOP...???

They look at me puzzled..... and I look stunned that they can't know what I mean....

It's Fun, enjoyable, it's a compliment for a distant quilter/creative person - who is immediately KNOWN and UNDERSTOOD in his/her yearning to share what the heart and hand has made!!!

Stick around as I am awaiting MY TURN....

Hello to My Block Swap Adventure Friends !!!

Here's to Rev. Traci (North Carolina) - - - yes -- your block was received!   So I am posting a  to and from  picture!!

Her purple and green block was immaculate......that's because I often look at the back of a block and it was truly perfect..... and her points matched perfectly.   She also sent a nice note... and a mini-friendly-business card!    Such a neat idea.... I've just duplicated a card for my own use in swapping blocks, and hexies and whatever other group I intend to join.   (There is a Siggie group somewhere waiting for me! LOL)

Traci asked for shades of Black, White, Silver (these colors can have designs in them but not extra colors)....(how can you dislike pink...dear sister!!!???)

Enjoy...... and have a great day!
BTW... click on the Block Swap image on my sidebar and join/follow along!

Why do I love to piece . . ? ? ? Peace & Tranquilty

My husband plays solitare on his cell phone (with a football game on TV -- no less) !  I reach for fabric.

His dad has myleofibrosis....  rare... 1 out of 100,000 in US.

WHY DO I LOVE TO PIECE?   It's the only tangible thing (besides my children) that I can mold, make, create --- yes even control the pace at which I piece together the bits and pieces of my life.....  and I see a pattern of repetition appearing... small and then bigger and bigger.  The peace I obtain .... is always rising out of the sea!  There are black skies with clouds and wind.....   but in my heart I hear a sound of the abundance of rain coming forth!!!

1 Kings 18:41-45 (New King James Version)
Then Elijah said to Ahab, “Go up, eat and drink; for there is the sound of abundance of rain.” So Ahab went up to eat and drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; then he bowed down on the ground, and put his face between his knees, and said to his servant, “Go up now, look toward the sea.”
So he went up and looked, and said, “There is nothing.” And seven times he said, “Go again.” Then it came to pass the seventh time, that he said, “There is a cloud, as small as a man’s hand, rising out of the sea!”
So he said, “Go up, say to Ahab, ‘Prepare your chariot, and go down before the rain stops you.’”  Now it happened in the meantime that the sky became black with clouds and wind, and there was a heavy rain. So Ahab rode away and went to  Jezreel.

My Design Wall is A Designer's Floor !

I'm really anxious for twenty blocks and a Border !  Don't we just love the piecing process!

I pull my pre-cut 2-inch strips from the Box (not Pizza - since my employer has DELL computer boxes of various sizes...!!!) Moving onto starched and ironed and squaring up of the 5", 8", 11", 14" and 17" strips of this heart-warming COURTHOUSE STEPS QUILT!

You might notice thru-out my blog postings that my quilt block end up on MY DESIGN FLOOR

The next place I display my quilt top ...   would be to move the blocks to my Father's living room....He chose blue carpet!

This is the 16-patch BLACK & WHITE BEAUTY ready for final large seam stitching together.   I haven't decided on border.... but I'm going to place feathers on the large white spaces!!!

Another Work N Progress !

So, this is a really large 16 - 17" Courthouse Step Block!
So much of my stash is autumn colored..... plus it's something in my color nature that draws me to the warmth of this palette....

I tried a minute of the QAYG.... didn't like the straight lines....
So I'll do twenty or forty blocks (one or two quilts.... I have a giveaway lovely lady!)
And I still want to set aside time to machine quilt!

Here's what's on the drawing board...
